Gavel to Gavel 89th Legislative Session - February 14, 2025
On Thursday afternoon, Speaker Dustin Burrows announced the much-anticipated House Committee assignments. You can view House Committee assignments, by committee here, and by member here. House Appropriations have already scheduled their first hearing on the General Appropriations Act, starting on Monday. We anticipate more House committees scheduling organizational meetings next week as activity in both Chambers is picking up.
Additionally, the Senate passed SB 4, increasing the homestead valuation for property tax exemption, by a 30-0 vote. Senators Mayes Middleton and Phil King filed priority legislation for the Lieutenant Governor, including SB 11, protecting the right to pray in schools, and SB 10, displaying the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms, respectively. Sen. King also filed SB 6, another Patrick priority, relating to the reliability of Texas’ electrical grid and infrastructure costs for large loads.
On Wednesday, in anticipation of the Senate Criminal Justice hearing SB 9, relating to bail reform, Lt. Governor held a press conference with Sen. Huffman and the family members of victims of violent crimes. The legislation is likely to be heard on the Senate floor next week.
The Texas Senate stands adjourned until Tuesday, February 18th at 11:00 AM, and the House until Tuesday at 2:00 PM.
